The Common Thread, a yarn and coffee shop, set to open this August at the former location of The Chelsea.

Exciting news is threading its way through the Warehouse Arts District: The Common Thread, a new fiber arts store and coffee shop, is opening this August in the space formerly occupied by The Chelsea St. Pete.

For founder and owner Shannon O-Brien, the opening is both a passion project and a dream come true.

“I was a big fan of the previous business that was here and was a frequent customer of that coffee shop,” she says. “So when I heard through the grapevine that the space was coming available, I was like, oh my gosh, that would be my dream to pop up there.”

The Common Thread offers a unique fusion of cozy coffee culture and vibrant fiber arts.

“Common Thread is a yarn shop and coffee shop combo concept—a fiber arts playground is how I like to think of it,” the owner explains.

Visitors can expect a curated selection of high-quality yarns, including sustainable and Florida-friendly materials like bamboo, eucalyptus, hemp, silks, and linens. O’Brien also plans to host classes to bring together the community and teach about breathable fabrics.

“A lot of people think yarn in Florida is going to have you sweating because it’s all wool,” she laughs. “But there are so many lightweight, beautiful fibers out there that are perfect for this climate.”

The Common Thread is set to open this August at 2462 5th Ave S St. Petersburg, FL 33712.
